In Short

  • The iPhone 16 series is likely to launch in September this year.
  • The 2024 standard, Pro, Plus and Max iPhone models are tipped to receive upgrades in some areas.
  • There are no leaks on the price of the iPhone 16, which makes total sense because we are still months away from the launch.

The iPhone 16 series is set to launch later this year, with leaks already providing insights into what to expect from the upcoming lineup. Just like previous years, Apple is anticipated to unveil four models: iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Improvements are expected in areas such as chipset, display, camera, and battery. This time around, Apple might finally offer support for faster charging speeds, but, of course, there won’t be chargers in the retail box. Here’s a summary of what we know so far based on the leaks.

iPhone 16, Plus, Pro, Pro Max leaks: Design, camera, chipset, display, and more

Any design upgrades?

Apple isn’t expected to make significant changes to the design of the 2024 iPhones. Leaks suggest the inclusion of a new Capture button, dedicated to swiftly capturing videos. This button is said to use haptic feedback technology, providing users with a tactile response upon touch. Additionally, an Action button may be introduced to standard models, alongside a continuation of the punch-hole design and the presence of a USB Type-C port across all models.

Bigger screen?

The iPhone 16 Pro is rumoured to feature a larger 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 16 Pro Max may boast a massive 6.9-inch screen. The previous leaks have suggested that both the models will have thin bezels, offering an enhanced viewing or gaming experience. On the other hand, the standard iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus are said to maintain their predecessor’s display sizes. This basically means that the standard and the Plus model could retain the 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch screens, respectively.

The leaks also suggest the standard iPhone 16 might finally receive support for a 120Hz refresh rate, a significant upgrade from the current 60Hz. While this is not yet confirmed, this leak hints at notable changes to Apple’s upcoming models.

New chipset, AI-based software?

The iPhone 16 Pro series is anticipated to be powered by the advanced A18 Pro chipsets, while the standard models might use a modified version of the A17 chip. However, speculations hint that it might not be the identical A17 Pro chip found in the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. We will have more clarity on the chipsets in the near future as more leaks pour in. Additionally, there are speculations about the integration of graphene into the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max to improve heat dissipation.

Everyone is aware of the fact that the 2024 iPhones will operate on the upcoming iOS 18 version. Apple’s next OS is rumoured to feature a VisionOS-like design with rounded icons and integrated generative AI. Reports hint at customisations and a new large language model to enhance Siri or work directly on the device. Additionally, stock mail and notes apps could get AI-powered features for automatic content summarisation and translation.

Camera upgrades?

Details regarding camera improvements are scarce, but rumours suggest enhancements such as an improved 48-megapixel Ultra Wide lens for the iPhone 16 Pro models, alongside advanced eight-part hybrid lenses for the Pro Max variant. We could get to see both models having 5x telephoto lenses, potentially eliminating the feature’s exclusivity to the Pro Max variant. You can expect to see a dual camera setup at the back of the standard and Plus models. The names of the sensors are currently unknown.

Bigger battery and fast charging speeds?

Leaks indicate larger battery capacities for the iPhone 16 series, with faster-charging support of up to 40W wired charging and 20W MagSafe charging expected. The iPhone 16 could come with a bigger 3,561mAh battery under the hood, whereas the iPhone 16 Plus could offer a 4,006mAh unit. While the details for the Pro model are unknown, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is tipped to arrive with a bigger 4,676mAh battery. However, it remains to be seen whether these features will be implemented in the upcoming models.

iPhone 16 series: Price hike?

As of now, there are no leaks on the price, which makes total sense because we are still months away from the launch. But, it is worth noting that Apple announced iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 at the price of the iPhone 13. All the three models were launched in India with a starting price tag of Rs 79,900. While the iPhone 14 didn’t receive big upgrades and was almost the same as the iPhone 13, the iPhone 15 did come with some major upgrades. But, Apple still offered it at the old prices. Although, the prices of the iPhone 15 Pro models were increased by a small margin last year. Moreover, this year, rumours suggest that Apple may introduce AI features alongside other upgrades in its devices. It will be interesting to see how Apple will sell its new iPhones this year and whether there will be AI features or not for an enhanced experience. We will have to wait for a few months to see whether Apple will increase the prices of the iPhone 16 series or launch all the devices at the older prices. The iPhone 16 series is likely to launch in September this year and you can stay tuned to India Today Tech for all the updates.
